ABOUT US
“Locally and Ecologically Raised Oysters by People Who Care”
At Double T Oyster Ranch, we're not just about oysters; we're about a mission. Our goal is straightforward yet profound – we want to share the unique story of our environment, and we've chosen oysters as our ambassadors. Recognizing oysters as keystone species, we're not only contributing ecologically but also culturally, weaving the rich history of Tall Timbers Marina into every shell. Growing oysters is our way of giving back to our local estuary while inviting others to savor the flavors shaped by the incredible natural surroundings.
"Our mission at Double T Oyster Ranch is to share the story of our unique environment - the oysters are a great icebreaker to this story.
We recognize oysters as a keystone species, not only ecologically but culturally. The oysters at Double T Oyster Ranch embody the rich history of Tall Timbers Marina, a place on the Lower Potomac River that has been passed down from generation to generation since 1917.
By growing oysters, we are able to clean our local estuary while inviting others to indulge in their sweet and salty flavor, made possible by the incredible surrounding natural environment."
OUR JOURNEY
In 2009, father and son duo, Rick and Spike Meatyard, decided to revolutionize the traditional oyster harvesting process. From a small discovery of thriving oysters under a boat in Tall Timbers Marina in 2008 to our current 2-acre aquaculture bottom lease in Herring Creek, it's been quite the journey. Today, we house 60 oyster cages, proving that sometimes, a small idea can grow into something exceptional.
Quality: We take quality seriously. No oyster leaves our grounds without meticulous hand-culling and approval. We're committed to delivering a product that's not just fast but also exceptional.
Family: We treat our customers like family. Seriously, we want you to come visit our oyster farm and restaurant, soak in the beauty, and enjoy the vibe. Consider yourself part of the extended Meatyard family!
Craftsmanship and History: What sets us apart is our heritage and connection to the local environment. Since 1917, the Meatyard family has been working with oysters, building our own cages, and collaborating with the local aquaculture plant. By working with the aquaculture plant, we are currently generating our own broodstock by harvesting oysters that survived the MSX and Dermo blight of the 1980s to produce seed oysters for future harvest.
As we expand, we aim to create job opportunities in the community.
ABOUT OUR OYSTERS
Our oysters aren't your average mollusks. They play a vital role in cleaning up our waters, with over half a million oysters in our small operation contributing to the creek’s biodiversity. Enhanced by the tidal flow from the Potomac River, our unique growing technique produces a distinct oyster with "Double T Cupped" shells – a true testament to the wild and rugged character of the waters they call home. TALL TIMBERS MARINA HISTORY
Oysters have been a part of the Meatyard family story since the 1920s. Rick Meatyard, the man behind Tall Timbers Marina, still works there, blending his love for boats, Bloody Marys, and growing oysters. Spike Meatyard, the marsh explorer, aims to keep one foot on land and the other in salty bay water. Their commitment is deeply rooted in the history and love for the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
